Can I sleep in the Vehicle over night in the Car Park?

You can not sleep in the vehicle over night. You can leave your car parked over night but you must find somewhere else to sleep. www.hostelworld.com. Is a good place to start looking! There are heaps of places to stay without sleeping in your car.

Can you guarantee that I will sell my vehicle in the car Market?

Unfortunately we can not guarantee that you will sell your vehicle at the car market. Travelling around Australia is very seasonal. Between September – February it is summer and is much busier. Selling at this time of the year will help you sell your vehicle quickly for more money. In winter it can take a little longer. Our experienced staff will help as much as they can and will give you advice on the best places to advertise. They will get you off to a head start by advertising your vehicle on www.cars4backpackers.com.au and on our Facebook page. If you have any questions about how to sell your vehicle then please stop by the office and speak with the car market staff

Do I HAVE to sell my Vehicle in the Car Market?

In Sydney it is frowned upon to park your vehicle on the side of a road to try and sell it. That was the whole reason for the Car Market opening. In some areas (including Victoria Street) it is illegal to park your vehicle with any ‘For Sale’ signage on. All vehicles in these areas will be towed away and the owners will be fined.

Do you take commission on the sale?

No. Once you have paid an entrance fee (see above) we do not charge any commission for assisting with the sale of your vehicle.

What is a Pink Slip?

A pink slip is a ‘PASS’ on a NSW roadworthy inspection, it costs $34.50 and it is required in order to renew registration in NSW. A pink slip in NSW is valid for 42 days. You do not need to have a valid Pink Slip at all times, only to renew your rego, or to sell through a licensed Car Market

What is a White Slip?

In a nut shell a white slip is a failed roadworthy inspection. So it will cost the same as a Pink Slip ($34.50) It will list everything that needs to be fixed in order to acquire a pink slip.

Where can I get a Roadworthy Inspection?

Most qualified mechanics can conduct a roadworthy inspection. Double check that they are an RTA approved Roadworthy Inspectorate.

**We ask all of our customers to get a Roadworthy inspection before they enter the Car Market. This is to help any potential buyer see the standard of the vehicle that they may buy as it will outline any work that needs doing if it does not pass.

Sydney Travellers Car Market can arrange Roadworthy inspections for all sellers.

What is a Blue Slip?

A Blue Slip is the NSW inspection for unregistered or interstate registered vehicle, in order for it to be re-registered in NSW. It costs around $60. This inspection is more thorough than a Pink Slip. Not all Pink Slip inspection centres are licensed to carry out Blue Slip inspections

What is a Green Slip?

The green slip is ‘Third party personal insurance’ (NOT property insurance, see below for more information). It is compulsory for all vehicles to have a green slip and you will not be able to add registration until you have done so. A good place to start looking for a green slip is www.greenslipking.com As long as your vehicle has rego anybody can drive it legally.

How would I transfer the vehicle into the new owner’s name? NSW ONLY

In order for a buyer to transfer the vehicle that they wish to buy into their name they must visit the RTA in the state where their vehicle is registered. You need 4 key prices of information to transfer the vehicle into your name.

1 – ID (Passport)

2 – Proof of Address (Hostel receipt, utility bill)

3 – Proof of Ownership (Documentation from they old owner saying that they have sold you the vehicle. (We can provide a template)

4 – Application for Transfer of Registration. You can get this from either the RTA or the Car Market Office.

How do I renew registration in NSW?

In order to renew registration the vehicle must first be registered in your name. You must then get a pink slip from a certified mechanic (this costs $34.50). Once you have a pink slip you can then add to your current registration, a vehicle can be registered for up to 12 months.

Do I NEED insurance to drive in Australia?

No, but it is HIGHLY recommended. Registration provides you with third party personal insurance; this does NOT cover any damage to property. In other words, anything you hit will be paid for directly out of your pocket. Check this websites insurance section for more information or speak with the Car Market staff.

How much does registration cost in NSW?

6 months

$660

12 Months

$960

How do I change my vehicles registration to NSW, and why would I want to?

Firstly you will need a blue slip (this costs $60), you can get this at most mechanics. The blue slip must be presented to the RTA (http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/) in order to change the registration. Once this is done you will then be refunded the remaining registration from the state you were previously registered with.

The reason for changing state may be that the buyer doesn’t want to travel to the previously registered state to transfer the vehicle into their name.

BUYERS

Why Should I Buy from the Car Market?

The Car Market is a safe secure and licensed environment for buyers and sellers to meet. All staff are experienced travellers who have purchased vehicles and driven around Australia before. We are here to give advice on transfer of registration, Insurance and pre-purchase inspections. We are here to help the seller prepare their vehicle for sale and give the buyer quality advice on driving around Australia.

Does it cost me anything to buy from the Car Market?

No it will cost you absolutely nothing to buy from the Car Market. All buying advice from our staff is completely free! The only thing you have to pay for is your vehicle, the price is determined between the buyer and seller.

Can you help with transferring the vehicle into my name?

Yes. Please read through the rest of our FAQ. If you have any further questions please visit the Car Market office and speak with one of our friendly staff.

Can I check if the vehicle has any outstanding infringements?

Yes! – It is strongly advised that you do a full police check on and potential vehicle. To do this please visit www.revs.com.au

I’ve found a vehicle that I like, how do I know if it is any good?

First arrange a test drive. If the seller is not prepared to let you test the vehicle before driving away there must be a problem. This is your chance to get a feel for the vehicle and ask your self ‘Is this the right car for me?’ ‘Can I see my self living in this vehicle for the duration of my trip?’

We strongly advise that before you drive away you get a pre-purchase inspection with a qualified mechanic. This will cost around $120 but in our opinion its money well spent. The inspection will give you an in depth view of the vehicle that your looking at buying. The mechanic will tell you if any work needs to be done its then your decision what you choose to do. You will then know the condition of the vehicle before you drive away.

We can arrange Pre-Purchase inspections for any potential buyer.

Do I need Insurance?

Insurance is not a legal requirement in Australia but most drivers choose to take it. As a non resident the highest level of Insurance that you can obtain is Third Party Property Insurance (TPPI.) Prices are significantly cheaper than in Europe.

‘Can you imagine buying a vehicle to travel around the country in, and crashing into another car before you even leave the city’ If you do not have TPPI you are going to have to pay for everything your self.’

OK I want it! Where can I buy TPPI?

We can provide it for you. Visit the car Market office and tell the staff that you would like to buy Insurance. They will take care of the rest. They will fill out all of the paperwork for you and explain everything in detail, even how to make a claim! – The Price will depend on how long you will need the insurance for.

I’m not leaving Sydney for a few days; can I park my new vehicle in the market?

All stay will have to be discussed with the Car Market management. Please visit the Car Market office

Will my vehicle come with any warranties or roadside assistance?

Unless the previous owner purchased their vehicle from a licensed dealer with a transferable warranty then it is very likely that the car will come without any roadside assistance or warranty. That will mean that if you break down you are responsible for all repairs and costs.

If you are looking for extra security while travelling around Australia we recommend you checking out www.travellers-autobarn.com.au They are a Licensed motor dealer that have been established since 1993. They specialize in selling vehicles to backpackers with a list of warranties, roadside assistance and insurance.
